MOORING SYSTEM DESIGN AND ASSESSMENT
Offshore Projects Consultants provides mooring-system design and assessment for vessels, floating structures and offshore operations.
We develop practical mooring arrangements that account for the vessel, operating location, environmental conditions and available equipment. Our work can support project planning, engineering approval and safe offshore execution.
Our Capabilities
OPC can provide engineering support for:
- Temporary, mobile and permanent mooring systems
- Quayside and inshore moorings
- Mooring arrangements for construction activities and lifting operations
- Mooring equipment selection
- Anchor holding-capacity assessment
- Assessment of existing mooring systems
- Vessel-position and excursion assessments
- Mooring-line tension calculations
- Evaluation of mooring lines, connectors and associated equipment
- Mooring operability assessments
- Preparation of mooring arrangement drawings and procedures
Mooring Analysis
Mooring performance depends on the interaction between the vessel, mooring lines, anchors and environmental loading. OPC evaluates these factors to determine whether the proposed system can maintain the required vessel position while keeping line tensions and equipment loads within acceptable limits.
Depending on the project, the assessment may consider:
- Vessel particulars and loading condition
- Water depth and seabed constraints
- Wind, wave and current loading
- Mooring line type, length and stiffness
- Pre-tension and line configuration
- Anchor locations and holding requirements
- Fairlead, bollard and winch capacities
- Vessel offsets and allowable operating limits
- Intact and damaged conditions
- Installation, pre-tensioning and recovery requirements
Static, quasi-static or dynamic analysis can be undertaken as appropriate to the operation, project requirements and available information.

Design Standards
Mooring systems are designed and assessed with reference to the applicable class rules, industry standards, client requirements and project-specific design criteria.
Depending on the nature and scope of the project, the engineering may be undertaken in accordance with:
- DNV-OS-E301 – Position Mooring
- DNV-ST-N001 – Marine Operations and Marine Warranty
- API RP 2SK – Design and Analysis of Station Keeping Systems for Floating Offshore Structures
These standards provide recognised requirements and guidance for matters including environmental loading, vessel offsets, mooring-line tensions, component capacity, redundancy, damaged conditions and the planning of marine operations.
The applicable standards, design conditions and acceptance criteria are agreed at the beginning of each project and recorded within the project design basis.
Deliverables
Depending on the project scope, OPC can provide:
- Mooring analysis reports
- Mooring arrangement and anchor-pattern drawings
- Mooring equipment specifications
- Mooring line tensions and vessel offsets
- Anchor and equipment load schedules
- Equipment and foundation assessments
- Operational limits and design criteria
- Mooring installation, pre-tensioning and recovery procedures
- Engineering documentation for client, Marine Warranty Survey or third-party review
Supporting Your Offshore Operations
Whether assessing an existing arrangement or developing a complete mooring plan, OPC provides clear and practical engineering focused on vessel control, safe operation and efficient offshore execution.
